What It Means To Support Us

Unfortunately, for most of these young people, a BIA volunteer is the only person who they experience this kind of relationship with.
Over the last five years, we have matched over 200 ‘at–risk’ young people with volunteer mentors in the Auckland area. These BIA volunteers are not distant ‘aid’, but instead, people living in the young person’s community, who use every-day activities, and love, to build quality relationships. The stories we hear from our volunteers, our young people, and their parents/caregivers remind us consistently that what we are doing works.
We are thrilled to have developed our programme to incorporate BIA Satellites over the past year – where BIA resources community groups to start mentoring in their communities. In 2010, we successfully launched a BIA Satellite in Warkworth, which has over 30 matches already. And in 2011, we have Satellites underway in Pukekohe, Pakuranga and the Coromandel, while we also have interest from seven other community groups around Auckland and New Zealand – including Mangere, Hauraki, and Queenstown. This is very exciting.
Satellites in localised communities can connect young people with mentors who live in their area, something that cannot be done efficiently by BIA centrally.
Currently, BIA is supporting over sixty mentoring matches with two paid staff. As of September 2011, we have nine volunteers awaiting matching, and over 25 others who would like to start the induction process – not including those interested from satellite areas. On top of that, we have six Satellites in different stages of development. The problem is, we simply do not have the capacity to progress with these satellites and volunteers further. Brothers in Arms survives on donations and grants from individuals and the community, without Government funding.
This is why we need your support, help us support more volunteers and change the lives of our vulnerable young people.
